You can bury the soaker hose under a thick layer of mulch right in the garden, and not only will you conserve water that would’ve evaporated before it reached the roots, you’ll also protect the hose once it’s there with the mulch. It’s a great system, and it’s easy! Just lay the hose out, cover it and you’re done!

If, however, you love gadgets and puzzles, drip irrigation may be the thing for you. These systems are made of a system of tubing, valves, emitters, pressure regulators, backflow preventers, line filters, and timers, and they can cost considerably more than their soaker counterparts. The companies that sell the equipment for drip irrigation can help you design a system that’s right for you. Even with their increased cost and complexity, these systems can more than make up for their drawbacks in areas of the country where water is at a premium. Well-designed systems can use between thirty and fifty percent less water than sprinkling!

The bottom line: These types of watering systems are head and shoulders above standard sprinklers or hand watering. Here’s why.

First, you don’t have to stand there with a hose, wasting your life, every night when you should be playing with your kids.

Second, watering from below ensures the water actually gets to the plants, rather than evaporating into the air or running off to where it’s not needed.

Third, watering from below keeps foliage dry, reducing the chance of inviting fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

Fourth, plants watered with drip systems grow more quickly and are more productive because they are not stressed out by lack of water.

And last, sprinklers, while fun for the kids in the summertime, often end up spraying you or your guests.
